Description

Learn a bit of Belize’s history as you ride to the  Xunantunich Archeological site. At the village of San Jose Succotz, we cross over the Mopan River using a hand-cranked ferry and drive up the mountain to the site. After we check-in, we take a small hike to the tallest temple that stands approximately 130 feet above plaza level and 600 feet above sea level, offering a panoramic view of the region. On your way to the top Howler monkeys and Green iguanas are some of the animals you may spot in the surrounding tree canopies. The center of the Xunantunich plaza is about one square mile and is comprised of six plazas surrounded by more than 26 temples and palaces.

Archeologist states that Xunantunich was abandoned sometime between 890 to 900 AD but up to date this site is still being excavated, and it continues to yield hidden artifacts and treasures. In 2016, archaeologists discovered an ancient tomb containing the skeletal remains of what is believed to have been a Mayan leader.
