For approximately 20 miles after Belize City, you will arrive at the old Northern Highway which will lead us to the ancient city of Altun Ha. Traversing through the old northern highway you will experience another cultural and historical tour of the small towns found along the way.

Altun-Ha Mayan site was a small but rich ceremonial center occupied during the classic period (250 to 900 CE). It is a Mayan City of over 500 mounds amongst them approximately only 3% that have been partially excavated. While exploring them, make sure you visit The Sun God Temple where the largest carved jade object in the Mayan World was found. Travel back in time while walking the paths of the Mayas, learn about the history of Altun-Ha and feel the presence of the Mayans.

Altun Ha has wheelchair accessible restroom and features a visitor center. The plazas are flat and are wheelchair-friendly. You will also have the opportunity to shop for some souvenirs such as locally handmade on-site wood crafts.

At the village of San Jose Succotz, we cross over the Mopan River using a hand-cranked ferry and drive up the mountain to the site. After we check-in, we take a small hike to the tallest temple that stands approximately 130 feet above plaza level and 600 feet above sea level, offering a panoramic view of the region. On your way to the top Howler monkeys and Green iguanas are some of the animals you may spot in the surrounding tree canopies. The center of the Xunantunich plaza is about one square mile and is comprised of six plazas surrounded by more than 26 temples and palaces.

Archeologist states that Xunantunich was abandoned sometime between 890 to 900 AD but up to date this site is still being excavated, and it continues to yield hidden artifacts and treasures.
